He
subsequently held a series of important posts: Director
of the Neuchâtel Catholic Action, priest for Montreux
and then Thoune, before being put in charge of the Brienz
Catholic school.
To
counter the excessively lax teaching methods used in
modern scouting, Father Malard founded his own leisure
community in 1997, based word for word on the charter
drawn up by Baden Powell in 1908.
The St Paul's Scouts Association advocates a set of
traditional methods in accordance with the strictest
rules and is focused on seeking new individual challenges
through a range of sports and spiritual courses.
Father
Malard is also the author of a work entitled Combatant
Monks in the Name of God, which sets the record
straight as to the role played by soldier monks.
The scouts are monitored by a group of 8 priests
during the courses and teaching. Their supervisory role
during the activities includes theological and moral
support for the youngsters to guide them in their personal
development.
Each session is punctuated with a pilgrimage for
the most deserving scouts. A point-based system is put
in place to reward the most courageous and thereby allow
the youngsters to acquire the concepts of setting themselves
new personal targets, rigour and discipline.
